This massive update was revealed in Bungie’s weekly article for the game.

Legendary Shards is one of many currencies in Destiny 2 that have been a major part of the game’s economy, along with Glimmer. After years of infinite shard exploits and farms, Bungie has finally announced a major update for this currency.

Earlier today, in Bungie’s weekly article This Week in Destiny, the developer revealed its plans to phase out the long-standing in-game currency known as Legendary Shards. The move comes as part of the developer’s ongoing efforts to streamline and simplify the game’s economy.

The Destiny 2 Economy team, in their statement, acknowledged these disparities and highlighted the challenges in finding a balance that satisfies both casual and dedicated players.

“As much as we know how bad it feels to have currencies that you have amassed over a long period of time wiped away, please know that we don’t make the decision to remove them lightly,” said Bungie. “We truly believe their removal is in the best interest of both the game and the players.”

Legendary Shards to be Phased out Starting Destiny 2 Season 23

Along with the announcement, Bungie has also laid out complete details on when this currency will be fully removed from the game. Starting with Season 23, Bungie will remove Legendary Shards costs from the Monument to Lost Lights kiosk at the Tower, with Glimmer, Exotic Cipher, and Spoils of Conquest untouched.

Here’s a quick rundown of how things will work post Legendary Shards removal in Destiny 2.

  • Monument to Lost Lights will no longer require Legendary Shards for purchases.
    • Glimmer, Exotic Cipher, and Spoils of Conquest costs remain unchanged.
  • Ritual gear focusing will also no longer cost Legendary Shards.
  • The Final Shape‘s release will remove all “remaining Legendary Shard sources and costs from the game” as well as from the currency bar in the player Inventory.
