Hints about Marathon pre-orders have been found in Destiny 2 game files, potentially pointing to the Q1 2025 window.

Since Bungie first revealed Marathon in May 2023, fans have been eagerly waiting for more updates on the highly anticipated extraction shooter. However, after that initial announcement, the developer has stayed largely silent, offering no new information.

Without any gameplay reveals or news, players are becoming increasingly curious—and even a bit concerned—about when they might finally hear more. This silence has led to speculation, with various rumors and reports surfacing in recent months.

But now, it looks like the wait may finally be coming to an end. Dataminers have recently found some hints about Marathon’s pre-order in Destiny 2 game files. Earlier this week, Bungie released a major update in Destiny 2 for Episode Revenant. This update introduced new content, activities, and rewards.

Destiny 2 Datamine Suggests Marathon Pre-Orders Coming Soon

Shortly after the update went live, fans began digging through the game files for hints about what’s coming next. A specific text string, “v820.offers.entitlements.d2.marathon.preorder,” was discovered–which The Game Post has verified–sparking speculation that Marathon pre-orders could open as early as Q1 2025.

The “v820” part is particularly important. Bungie tracks Destiny 2 expansions and seasons with version numbers: The Final Shape is “v800,” while the current episode, Revenant, is “v810.” Seeing “v820” in the string points to Episode Heresy, which drops on February 4, 2025.

This could mean one of two things:

  • Marathon pre-orders may launch alongside Destiny 2’s Episode Heresy in February 2025 or sometime during the first quarter.
  • This might hint at a pre-order bonus for Destiny 2 players who purchase Marathon, such as exclusive in-game rewards.

It’s important to remember, though, that this is all unconfirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt until Bungie provides official confirmation.

Still, this adds weight to The Game Post’s report that Marathon will follow a premium pricing model–considering there’s a pre-order for the game–not the free-to-play structure some anticipated.

Forbes also backed this, corroborating the $40 price tag, adding that there may be some sort of reveal happening later this year. If accurate, this datamined file could be the first real confirmation of that pricing strategy.

Additionally, Bungie recently added a Marathon-themed item in Destiny 2: the “Runner Mask,” which will be available during the Festival of the Lost event in 2024.

Bungie Inviting Content Creators to Playtest Marathon

Apart from that, it looks like there’s been another major external playtest for Marathon this past week. Several content creators have confirmed on social media that they were invited to Bungie to playtest the game, further fueling excitement among fans.

While fans wait for more news, the appearance of Marathon-related content in Destiny 2 could hint that Bungie is preparing for a larger reveal soon.
