Elden Ring 2 isn’t in development yet, but FromSoftware has multiple projects in the works, including titles across different genres, as confirmed by Hidetaka Miyazaki in a recent interview.
Elden Ring took the gaming world by storm when it launched in early 2022. Combining FromSoftware‘s signature challenging gameplay with an expansive, immersive open-world crafted in collaboration with George R.R. Martin, it quickly became a global phenomenon.
The game has sold millions of copies and garnered countless awards. Fast forward to 2024, and the game’s first major DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, has only added to its success.
The DLC is even nominated for the Game of the Year award at this year’s The Game Awards. Naturally, fans have been speculating about the possibility of Elden Ring 2. However, Hidetaka Miyazaki, director of FromSoftware, has clarified that a direct sequel is not currently in development.
Miyazaki Speaks on Elden Ring’s Future And Other FromSoftware Projects
In a recent interview with Game Watch, FromSoftware’s president and Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki Miyazaki addressed the studio’s current projects and future direction, offering a glimpse into their creative process. When asked about the possibility of Elden Ring 2, he replied:
“At this stage, we are not thinking of developing something like Elden Ring 2,” Miyazaki revealed. “However, this doesn’t mean we’ve ruled out future developments for the IP.”
Instead, FromSoftware is keeping itself busy with multiple new projects in a “variety of genres”. According to Miyazaki:
“As always, FromSoftware is working on multiple projects, including a variety of genres and scales. Please look forward to what’s coming.”
When asked about what FromSoftware’s next project will be, Miyazaki replied: “I can’t answer that (laughs). There are multiple projects in progress, covering a variety of genres. Some of these titles are directed by me, while others are being handled by different team members.”
“Through these, I believe we can show new sides of FromSoftware in various ways, so please look forward to them.”
Miyazaki also clarified that while Shadow of the Erdtree could have been sold as a standalone game given its sheer size, that was never part of their vision. “From the beginning, we intended this to be a DLC,” he stated, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining the adventurous spirit that defined Elden Ring.
“The scale was a deliberate choice to maintain the adventurous spirit of Elden Ring.”
In other FromSoftware news, reports suggest that Sony is interested in acquiring Kadokawa Corporation, FromSoftware’s parent company. For now, while Elden Ring 2 isn’t on the horizon, it’s clear that FromSoftware is far from slowing down.
