Bungie reportedly considered a Destiny Infinity relaunch for Destiny 2 before deciding to end live-service development, with Destiny 3 also discussed internally.
Bungie’s decision to end live service development on Destiny 2 has hit the community hard. After years of expansions, raids, seasonal stories, and major updates, the studio confirmed last week that Destiny 2’s final live service content update, Monument of Triumph, will launch on June 9, 2026. The game will stay playable, but active development is coming to an end.
As expected, the reaction from fans and the wider industry has been heavy. Some players are frustrated, others are sad, and many are still trying to understand why Bungie just didn’t straight up start working on a Destiny 3 after The Final Shape. There has also been a lot of talk about Destiny 3, fan petitions, and whether Marathon played a role in Destiny 2’s future being cut short.

Now, we have more reported details on what may have happened behind the scenes before Bungie made the final call.
Bungie Reportedly Discussed ‘Destiny Infinity’ Before Ending Destiny 2 Support
According to a new report from Forbes’ Paul Tassi, Bungie was already looking at possible next steps for Destiny 2 after The Edge of Fate did not perform the way the studio had hoped. The situation reportedly became harder to ignore once Renegades also fell short and failed to bring the kind of sales or player retention boost Bungie needed.
One option on the table was a major course correction for Destiny 2’s release model. Instead of continuing with the newer plan of two smaller expansions and two updates each year, Bungie reportedly looked at returning to one larger yearly expansion. Tassi reports that this could have come with a relaunch-style name: Destiny Infinity, giving the game a new identity without fully moving into Destiny 3.
The idea, as described in the report, was not a full Destiny 3. Instead, it would have been more of a fresh start for Destiny 2, giving Bungie a way to rebuild interest without starting completely from scratch. Destiny 3 was also reportedly considered, but Tassi says his sources do not believe it is currently happening.

“One idea was scrapping the two-expansion model and going back to one big expansion again and renaming the game ‘Destiny Infinity,'” the report reads. “The goal there was a kind of relaunch as opposed to doing a true Destiny 3 to kickstart momentum.”
The main issue was cost. Any path forward for Destiny, including a relaunch or a full sequel, would have required a huge amount of money. So for now, all eyes are on the pitches the Destiny 2 team is reportedly making to the leadership to get at least something (Destiny-related or not) greenlit.
As for the Destiny 3 petition and the planned June 9 login surge, the report says these efforts are unlikely to reverse Bungie’s decision or get Destiny 3 greenlit.
For now, Destiny 2 is heading toward its final major update, while fans are left wondering what could have happened if Bungie had started working on a Destiny 3 right after The Final Shape.

What do you think? Would a Destiny Infinity relaunch have been enough to bring players back, or was Destiny 3 the only real way forward? Let us know yourt thoughts in the comments below!
