A former Bungie developer says a Destiny dating sim was made internally, inspired by Dream Daddy, but leadership reportedly shut it down.
Bungie’s Destiny franchise has had a lot of strange and unexpected ideas over the years (like the Genshin Impact-inspired spinoff codenamed “Payback” that was canceled in 2024), but one of the most surprising ones is still the dating sim.
Back in 2024, it was revealed that Bungie had made some kind of Destiny dating sim internally during game jams. At the time, there were barely any details about what it looked like, how far along it was, or if players were ever meant to see it.

That alone was enough to get fans talking, mostly because Destiny has no shortage of characters people are attached to. From Shaxx and Mara Sov to Crow, Saint-14, Osiris, Eris, and Drifter, there are plenty of names that fans would probably expect to show up in something like this.
Now, we have a little more information on this front.
Former Bungie Dev Shares New Details On Destiny Dating Sim
The new details come from former Bungie community manager Liana Ruppert, who shared more about the project on X after someone asked Bungie to “give us the dating sim we deserve.”
According to Ruppert, the team actually did make one internally, but leadership was not interested in moving forward with it. The reason, she says, was that leadership believed players did not want romance or silly side content in Destiny. Ruppert also said the project was inspired by Dream Daddy, the popular dating sim where players romance different dads.
Here is her full comment:
“Fun fact, the team actually made one, but leadership was very Hard No that nobody wanted romance or silliness. Very Dream Daddy inspired lmao. It was fun getting to be a small part of it.”

Though we do not know if Ruppert is talking about the same game jam dating sim that was previously reported, or if this was a different internal project that went further than fans first thought.
In other news, Bungie is reportedly getting ready for a massive round of layoffs in the coming weeks, with reports saying that it could affect up to 50% of the staff, which would be around 400 employees.
Other reports have also claimed that Destiny 3 is not currently in active development, leaving the future of the franchise unclear beyond Destiny 2 remaining playable. Bungie has not officially confirmed the reported layoffs or any Destiny 3 plans.

What do you think? Would a Destiny dating sim have worked, or was Bungie right to leave it behind?
